00:00 – 00:08
John Wilson: Mark, I can't thank you enough for being on the CEO Global Network podcast. Thanks for taking the time to be with us.
00:08 – 00:11
Marc Henein: Thanks. Happy to be here.
00:11 – 00:58
John Wilson: Just for the benefit of our listeners, a brief intro: Senior wealth advisor and director at Scotiabank Wealth Management, CEO of the Henein Group, recognized by the Globe and Mail as one of the top 150 wealth advisors in the country. Former chair of the Georgetown Hospital Foundation, past president of the Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association, and currently on the board of Easterseals Ontario. Great to have you here.
00:59 – 01:11
John Wilson: Can you tell everybody your background, sort of how you became a wealth advisor?
01:11 – 01:44
Marc Henein: I discovered the stock market in grade 10 at age 16. My economics teacher connected me with a wealth advisor who hired me as a summer student. I was hooked from that moment and knew what I wanted to do with my life.
01:44 – 02:29
John Wilson: That's wonderful. You've been on our webinars numerous times. What's one lesson that you've learned early in your career that shapes how you advise clients today?
02:29 – 03:27
Marc Henein: All about understanding expenses. Know where your money is going—every subscription, every outflow. This advice applies to everyone, whether you're 18 or 80. Understanding outflows helps with inflows.
03:27 – 03:36
John Wilson: That's great advice. What's one financial mistake that you see successful people make repeatedly?
03:36 – 04:35
Marc Henein: Lifestyle creep—expenses increase as income grows. Bigger homes, private schools, extra fees. Be cautious and review your expenses to prevent your lifestyle from creeping away from your financial goals.
04:35 – 04:49
John Wilson: On this next question, how do you help clients move from stress or uncertainty about finances to confidence in their financial future?
04:49 – 06:22
Marc Henein: It starts with a plan—moving from position A (today) to position B (desired future). A financial roadmap provides certainty, calms stress, and allows long-term thinking. Solving for the easiest path from A to B helps clients focus on what truly matters without being distracted by market noise.
06:22 – 06:39
John Wilson: Long-term thinking is key. What is one piece of advice you'd leave listeners with about their financial future that we haven't covered?
06:39 – 08:11
Marc Henein: Come up with your number—the amount of money needed to cover your expenses through passive income. For example, if you spend $50,000/year, you need $1 million at 5% to generate that cash flow. Visualize it, write it down, put Post-It Notes around your office or home. A clear number creates purpose, direction, and motivation.
08:11 – 08:35
John Wilson: Mark, thank you so much for being here. Every time I hear you speak, I learn something new. We appreciate your counsel and insights.
08:35 – 08:36
Marc Henein: Thank you, John. Happy to be here today.
