So just before we get started, I thought it might make sense to give people a quick thumbnail introduction of you… First question: What's a moment in your leadership journey to this point, Christina, that has really influenced how you lead today?

Christina Visser (01:41)
One of the big moments for me was when one of our companies started to lose money shortly after I became CEO. I realized I had to get into the details—proposals, terms, margins, project management. We were able to turn it around, and that confidence has served me well ever since.

No, that would be learning under fire. What role does mentorship play in shaping the next generation of women in technology, Christina?

Christina Visser (02:30)
Mentorship has been huge. WISE—Women in Science and Engineering—helped me find support as both a mentor and mentee. Now we’re seeing the next generation of women entering tech, which is incredibly gratifying.

Absolutely. What's been the biggest leadership challenge transitioning from engineering to being the CEO?

Christina Visser (03:48)
Sometimes I miss engineering, but the analytical skills from my engineering background actually help me as CEO. Understanding the details of reports, designs, programs, and commissioning allows me to lead effectively.

How does IONIQ stay agile while managing multiple subsidiaries and technologies in different countries?

Our divisional structure allows people to focus on their areas of expertise. We also encourage a culture of sharing ideas, even half-baked ones, which fosters innovation and collaboration.

What is one overlooked risk with automation that more leaders should talk about?

Christina Visser (06:24)
Automation loves consistency. When processes are inconsistent, automation becomes more expensive and challenging. The key is working with experienced partners to find the right balance.

How do you define success in a company like yours that spans both high-tech and heavy industry?

Christina Visser (07:11)
Success is about safety and productivity—keeping people out of dangerous environments while improving efficiency. Our vision has always been to “get paid to play with big expensive toys,” and every day we live that purpose.
